EMS Muscle Sculpting

The concept of ElectroMagnetic Stimulation (EMS) was first used by d'Arsonval in 1896. Since then, it has evolved to be widely used in diagnostics, research, and rehabilitation. It has become an established tool to treat conditions such as depression (repetitive transcranial magnetic stimulation [rTMS]), Parkinson's disease (deep rTMS), and incontinence.

Muscle Sculpting using EMS is a cutting-edge advancement in body contouring and muscle toning technology. Unlike conventional workouts or surgical interventions, EMS Muscle Sculpting forces supramaximal muscle contractions in targeted muscle groups. A single 30-minute session provides 20,000 full muscle contractions, which accelerates muscle growth and fat reduction simultaneously. This dual-action mechanism sets EMS Muscle Sculpting apart from other body contouring methods, providing a quick, easy, and effective solution for individuals seeking a more toned physique without the exhaustive physical exertion.

Ideal Candidates

EMS Muscle Sculpting is designed to force muscle growth and fat loss in targeted areas. Even though our clients differ in body types, EMS Muscle Sculpting works effectively for all genders. Ideal candidates have a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 25 or under, and are seeking a targeted boost in muscle growth because traditional exercise doesn’t produce desired results fast enough. Clients with a higher BMI have also reported satisfactory results depending on the thickness of fat over the targeted muscle group. This technology is also ideal for treating postpartum diastasis recti (see Research Section).

For best results, EMS Muscle Sculpting should be part of a diet and lifestyle program. This procedure is not intended for weight loss.

The Technology/Science

EMS Muscle Sculpting uses high-intensity focused electromagnetic stimulation to induce supramaximal muscle contractions at a level that is impossible to achieve through voluntary exercise. This non-invasive technology penetrates more than 7cm deep into muscle tissues, triggering muscle contractions that lead to both muscle hypertrophy and localized fat reduction. EMS Muscle Sculpting forces muscles to adapt and remodel, resulting in enhanced muscle tone and strength. Increases in muscle thickness and reduction in fat thickness have been validated with MRI scans (see Research Section).

The Treatment Process

Consultation and Baseline Measurements:

Our experienced technician will answer your questions and discuss your goals to determine whether EMS Muscle Sculpting or another treatment is most suitable for you. They will take your oxygen saturation, vitals, body metrics, fat percentage using ultrasound, and baseline photos.

Applicator Application:

The applicator administers focused electromagnetic stimulation to targeted muscle groups. The level of intensity will begin at 50%, and gradually increase according to your maximum tolerance for 30 minutes per muscle group.

No Downtime:

After the applicator is removed, you can resume normal activities immediately.

What Does It Feel Like? What Is the Experience Like?

During an EMS Muscle Sculpting procedure, you will experience a series of 20,000 intense involuntary muscle contractions followed by releases. At first, it will feel like an uncomfortable yet tolerable pulsing/buzzing sensation as your muscles fully contract. Our clients usually acclimate to the sensations in about 10 minutes, and the procedure becomes relaxing. It is generally not a painful experience. Many clients use this time to relax, read, use their phone, or watch something.

After the session, some clients might experience mild muscle soreness, similar to what you might feel after an intense workout. Overall, this procedure is designed to be non-invasive and tolerable, without the need for physical exertion, allowing individuals to return to their daily activities immediately after the treatment.

Duration and Frequency of Sessions

The first session, including consultation, is approximately 1.5 hours for one treated area. Please allocate approximately 1 hour for subsequent sessions, and an additional 30 minutes for each muscle group. You are free to take breaks between applications.

The treatment frequency is 1 session every 2-3 days, or about 2 sessions per week for 4 weeks, for a total of 8 treatments. Maintenance sessions can be done every week to every month depending on your goals. Results can be seen as early as 2 weeks, and can continue for months following the latest treatment. For best results, consider working with a healthcare professional who can help you adhere to a healthy lifestyle plan.

What Are the Treatable Areas?

EMS Muscle Sculpting can effectively tone the following muscle groups:

  • Abdomen
  • Buttocks
  • Arms
  • Thighs
  • Calves

Why is This Better Than Other Treatments

EMS Muscle Sculpting offers a unique advantage over other body contouring treatments because it is able to simultaneously build muscle and reduce fat in targeted areas. It is a non-invasive procedure so there is no downtime. For people who are unable or unwilling to follow gruelling workout routines, this is the perfect solution to sculpt your physique quickly, effectively, and easily.

Compared to electrical stimulation where electrodes are placed on the skin, there is a significantly smaller chance of feeling itches and pain since there is no heat being generated under the skin. There is also no risk of burns.

Preparing for the Treatment

There's minimal preparation required for an EMS Muscle Sculpting session.

Pre-Session Nourishment:

Make sure to eat a meal earlier in the day and maintain proper hydration to minimize cramping.

Attire:

Wear comfortable and/or athletic clothing suitable for relevant comparison photos. Jewellery and other metal items cannot be worn during the treatment.

For the ultrasound body fat percentage scan, we will need access to:

Men: pectoral area, abdomen, and mid-thigh

Women: triceps, abdomen, and hips

Entertainment:

Bring something to pass the time during the session that does not involve metal, like a book.

Aftercare and Maintenance

You are free to resume normal activities after your treatments. Just like after an intense workout, your muscles might feel a little sore, and it’s recommended to consume some protein and water. The effectiveness of this procedure can be influenced by factors like smoking, excessive alcohol consumption, ongoing medication, and over/under eating.

Maintenance sessions can be done every week to every month depending on your goals. Results can be seen as early as 2 weeks, and can continue for months following the latest treatment. For optimal and long-lasting results, consider working with a healthcare professional who can help you adhere to a healthy lifestyle plan.

Contraindications

EMS Muscle Sculpting is generally safe for most individuals, but there are certain contraindications:

  • Pregnancy, lactation, or post-partum period;
  • Currently menstruating;
  • Cardiac pacemakers;
  • Implanted defibrillators or neurostimulators;
  • Electronic implants;
  • Pulmonary insufficiency;
  • Metal implants;
  • Drug pumps;
  • Hemorrhagic conditions;
  • Heart disorders;
  • Malignant tumors;
  • Fever;
  • Metallic IUD;
  • Epilepsy;
  • Disturbance of temperature or pain perception, or skin sensation;
  • Septic conditions and empyema;
  • Contagious skin disease;
  • Previous scarring in the treatment area;
  • Bleeding/open/infected wounds;
  • Grave’s disease;
  • Recent surgical procedure (muscles contraction may disrupt the healing);
  • Hernia or history of hernia in or adjacent to the treatment area.

Adverse Effects and Risks

The most common adverse effect from EMS Muscle Sculpting is temporary muscle soreness and/or fatigue post-treatment, akin to that following an intense workout.

During or immediately following a session, some clients may experience nausea and/or dizziness. In almost all cases, this is a mild and short-lived experience that self-resolves within a few hours. To minimize this risk, you should ensure that you are well-hydrated before and after treatments. If symptoms persist or worsen, consult with your healthcare provider for further guidance.

Rarely, clients may experience redness, swelling, or bruising in the treated areas, which should subside within a few days.

At Chill N Sculpt, we strive to minimize this risk for our clients. We encourage you to check out the research section of our website so that you can make an informed decision about proceeding with this treatment. If you have any questions, we are happy to discuss your concerns during a free consultation.
